Since May 10, 2000, the red palmoil price per kilogram is S/. 9,500 (US$ 0.38); the palmoil fruit price per kg. is S/. 1,567.5 (US$ 0.063) in Quevedo, and S/. 1,615 (US$ 0.065) in Quinindé. Approximately 5% up than the previous ones.

Since April 11, 2000 up to date, the red palm oil price per kilogram is S/.9,000 (US$ 0.36); the palm oil fruit price per kg. is S/. 1,485 (US$ 0.059) in Quevedo, and S/.1,530 (US$ 0.061) in Quinindé. This is, approximately 7% up than the previous ones.

Ecuadorian oils have a new export route to Brazil. This route is the waterway Orellana-Manaos, which was opened on March 26, 1999 after the peace agreement with Peru. This trade route accounts for a 1,000 tons capacity tugboat, with a twice-monthly trip frequency. Due to this new route, trade between Ecuador and Peru will be more fluid; the Ecuadorian oil arrives to Manaos in 15 days.

Do you know how many labor posts does Oil Palm farming creates?
Oil palm farming generates lots of labor. According to the Palm Oil Growers National Association (ANCUPA) direct and permanent labor posts generated through the 140,000 sowed hectares, are approximately 50,000. In the San Lorenzo's area (Province of Esmeraldas), 2,000 posts have been created, which positively affects farmers' life conditions.

Domestic palm oil and palm fruit prices have remain the same for a month, from January 19, 2000 until now, prices in Quininde have been S/.7,700 per kilogram of raw oil, S/.1,309 per kilogram of palm fruit, and in Quevedo S/.1,270.50 per kilogram of palm fruit; previously, prices have had forenight variations. Fixing the dollar exchange rate at S/.25,000, which stopped an aggresive devaluation of the sucre, helped palm oil prices stability.

Palm oil exports close 1999 with a record volume of 70,000 MT, fulfilling thus stipulated volume. Of the aforementioned volume, 56,000 MT are raw palm oil exports and 14,000 MT of unfinished commodities; growing 4 times more than the 1998 exports, which where just of 11.322 MT. According to FEDEPAL data, for the 2000 year, it will trade 30,000 MT, with a view to 10,000 MT more.

According to FEDEPAL, new prices for palm oil were applied since Tuesday November 30: S/.5,800 per kilogram of raw palm oil, S/.986 per kilogram of palm oil fruit in Quinindé, and S/.957 per kilogram of palm oil fruit in Quevedo. Such an adjustment is basically because international prices have a bearish tendency and due to a high exchange rate fluctuation.

New domestic prices for Palm Oil since November 23, 1999: 6,300 sucres per kilogram of raw palm oil 1,071 sucres per kilogram of palm oil fruit in the Quininde canton, and 1,039.50 sucres per kilogram of palm oil fruit in Quevedo.

The technological transfer program, promoted by the Palm Oil Growers National Association (ANCUPA) is firmly moving forward through tripartite agreements with INIAP and several extractor firms: PALCIEN, PEXA, RIO MANSO, and PALMISA. The AIQUISA Extractor is a new member of this transference program, accounting for 150 fruit providers, potential beneficiaries of training addressed to sound management of palm oil development, which will allow better yield and thus higher returns.

According to FEDAPAL, the raw palm oil domestic price increased during last months, encouraging farmers after a very hard year of low prices. With a September price of 3,750,000 sucres/MT, it rose to 5,800,000 sucres/MT for October. Actual palm oil price is 5,800,000 sucres/MT, palm oil fruit 986,000 sucres/MT in the Quinindé canton. Increases behaviour was due to the sucre devaluation with regard to the dollar, and red pal oil international price light recovery.

According to a Dr. AJS Benadé survey, absence of vitamin A is one of the main problems in developing countries, especially in Ecuador. Such an absence adversely impacts on infectious resistance processes in little childs increasing infant mortality risk. Red palm oil is one of the main sources of beta-carotene, vitamin A precursor which, included in natural meals like biscuits, should be distributed through poor communities' scholastic programs.

Palm Oil Growers National Association (ANCUPA) have swifty advanced on its technological transfer program, through tripartite agreements with INIAP (Agricultural Research National Institute), and extractor firms like PLACIEN, PEXA, RIO MANSO, and PALMISA. This process involves 175 growers that sell fruit to extractor firms. Main objective is to develop an efficient production and high tech for domestic and international markets. Administrative and accounting matters are also included in order to help small grower to became a small-scale industrialist with knowledge on account and business management. Congratulations for such a valuable work!

FEDAPAL (Palm Oil Foundation for Exports' Promotion) based on its 1999 exports, which could close lately December with approximately 60,000-70,000 MT, and on future production, has forecast the year 2000 exports to have a minimum export basis of 30,000-40,000 MT. Thus, they have contact main buyers in order to advance marketing process.

On a survey performed in Ecuador by the Potash and Phosphorus Institute, positive effects of fertilizers applied in Palm Oil cultivation are obvious as plant grows, thus, nitrogen, phosphorus, potash, magnesium, sulphur, and calcium use is recommended. Quantity to be used should be determined by a proper soil analysis. Water addition during dry season increases yield approximately to 5 tons of fruit/ha/year.

Palm oil cultivation increases in Ecuador. According to ANCUPA (Palm Oil Growers National Association), actually there are approximately 130,000 ha of sown fields on the central, eastern, and Orient zones, plus 40,000 ha to be seed in San Lorenzo.

Palm oil exports broke its historical record of 11 thousand MT/year; during 1999, 45,000 tons of raw palm oil have been exported, and is forecasted to export 10,000 tons of semi-processed oil. According to ANCUPA, exports will reach 75,000 MT.

What do you know about Palm Oil in Ecuador? This crop was inserted in Ecuador in the 60s. Actually there are 2,126 palm oil producers, 123,686 sown fields, located in the central, eastern and Orient zones of the country, specially in Santo Domingo, Quinindé, Buena Fé, and Francisco de Orellana. Palm oil production is estimated above 205,000 tons. This is a high quality oil; locally expended and exported basically to Mexico.

What do you know about the Palm Oil cultivation? Is a wet-tropical large-cycle cultivation. First production time is at 4 years old (through bunches), major production is from 7 to 12 years. It is recommended to change every 25 years. Crop can be done all year long. Fruit is divided in flesh and seed; red palm oil is obtained from the flesh of the fruit, and kernel oil from the seed. These palm oils are used in the industry in order to prepare edible oils and fats, as well as for soap manufacturing and animal feed process.

Dramatic situation of palm oil commercialization. Basically due to two reasons which makes difficult to sell locally and internationally. 1) exports price plunge, from 650 MT late 1998, to about $ 430, and 2) Lack of money in palm oil industries for raw material purchases.
