AN ASSOCIATION AT THE SERVICE OF ECUADORIAN COFFEE GROWERS

OBJECTIVES

· To represent and seek union, technification, and development of coffee producers in Ecuador.

· To provide its members with technical assistance and transfer of technology through a rural extension service.

· To contribute practical, concrete solutions to key problems in Ecuadorian coffee growing, through research programs.

· To contribute ideas and practical solutions in order to have the represented sector perform with efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness.

· To develop ties and alliances with national and foreign entities so as to favor coffee growers in Ecuador.

MEMBER SERVICES

  • Technical assistance related to coffee (robust, organic and conventional Arabian); diversification activities (peppers, cacao, beans, corn, pig-farming, etc.).

  • Research on agricultural topics, genetic selection, and post-harvesting.

  • Leadership training for association officials.

  • Support and advising to grower associations devoted to coffee marketing (PROCAF, UCOPE in Loja, AASCRI in Imbabura, etc.).

CORECAF’S STRUCTURE

CORECAF’S MISSION

To represent, defend, and support coffee growers in their efforts to improve the quality, profitability, and efficiency of their activity.

COFFEE SECTOR OUTLOOK

Sustainable, competitive coffee growing worldwide, to generate well-being for the growers’ families on the basis of an efficient, self-managed structure.

COFFEE GROWER REGISTRATION

Registered coffee growers are those persons that have at least 600 coffee plants or half a hectare in production and have acquired their coffee registration. They are the cornerstone and support of the growers association.

MEMBERS’ RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS

  • To make suggestions and proposals to high-level Corporation officials.

  • To elect and be elected.

  • To make use of the Corporation’s services.

  • To contribute to the payment of the quotas set by the Congress.

  • To respect and enforce the by-laws.

CANTONAL COMMITTEES

This level of the association structure is formed by coffee growers elected by a democratic vote every two years.

Functions

  • To abide by and enforce the by-laws.

  • To carry out campaigns and projects to improve coffee growing.

  • To promote the registration of coffee growers.

  • To study and decide on requests from coffee growers in the canton.

REGIONAL COMMITTEES

These are a regional level of the association structure (Jungle, Highlands and Coast). They are composed of five members and five alternates elected democratically for a two-year term.

Functions

  • To organize the coffee growers association in the region.

  • To carry out the instructions of the Executive Committee.

  • To serve as spokespersons for growers.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

This is the highest-level decision-making body of the association outside the Coffee Growers Congress. The Executive Committee is composed of six members appointed by the Congress every two years.

Functions

  • To coordinate with the Director General regarding the management of the Corporation’s administrative and growers association affairs.

  • To adopt measures to ensure the development and defense of the production sector.

  • To submit the annual work plan and budget to the Congress.

  • To exercise the authority to interpret by-laws when the Congress is not in session.

COFFEE GROWERS CONGRESS

This is the highest-level authority of CORECAF. It meets once annually, during the last two months of the year. The Coffee Growers Congress is composed of members of the cantonal and regional committees and the Executive Committee.

Functions

  • To review the work undertaken by CORECAF.

  • To study the problems of the coffee sector and enact measures deemed appropriate.

  • To approve the Corporation’s annual work plan and budget.

  • To elect six members to the Executive Committee, as well as their alternates.

  • To appoint the Director General of the Corporation.
