For April 2004, the inflationary spiral established at 0.65% in comparison with March of the same year; the variation was due to a bigger growth  the prices of the group: Food, Beverages and Tabacco; also the Costa Region cycle school initiation added to the growth of the index. From May/2003 to April/2004, the inflation was 3.65%.

The Basic Basket was quoted at US$387.59, 0.5% more than the registered at March/ 2004.

The contribution of groups to the monthly variation of 0.65% in the general index was: Food, beverages and tobacco with 0.44 points, caused by increases in the subgroup indexes: Bread and cereals 3.9% and, Fish and sea food 2.9%; the contribution of Education was 0.21 points, due to a variation of 4.4% in the group of Educational Services and beneath this, an increase of 10.5% in the subgroup Superior Education; the difference is composed by the rest of the groups.

Underneath the Food, beverages and tobacco group, the following articles quoted in dollars by kilo at national level that registered considerable possitive increases between the months of March ans April 2004, were:  blackberry 17.0% (2.30 to 2.69), fresh frijol 10.3% (1.95 to 2.15), cabbage 8.4% (0.25 to 0.27), fresh cheese 8.0% (2.66 to 2.87), eggs 6.3% (1.18 to 1.26), rice 5.7% (0.66 to 0.70), among other products; on the contrary, the articles that presented significant negative variations during the same period of time were: garlic 22.4% (4.89 ti 3.79), yucca 17.7% (0.42 to 0.35), orange 11.3% (0.39 to 0.35), apples 7.0% (1.49 to 1.39), watermelon 6.0% (0.34 to 0.32), among others.
